The terrain varies from well-trodden paths to more rugged sections, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended.
Starting at Exford Bridge, you'll immediately be immersed in the lush greenery of the Exford Wood. This section of the trail is relatively flat and easy, making it a good warm-up. Keep an eye out for the diverse bird species that inhabit this area, including woodpeckers and nuthatches.
After about 2 km (1.2 miles), the trail begins to ascend. This is where you'll gain most of the 200 meters (656 feet) in elevation. The climb is steady but manageable, with occasional breaks in the trees offering stunning views of the surrounding Somerset countryside. This section can be slippery after rain, so take care with your footing.
Once you reach the ridge, the trail levels out and offers a more relaxed hike through dense forest. This part of the trail is particularly beautiful in autumn when the leaves change color. You'll pass by ancient oak trees and might even spot a deer or two if you're quiet and observant.
As you continue along the ridge, you'll come across remnants of old stone walls and possibly even a dilapidated shepherd's hut. These structures date back to the medieval period when the area was used for sheep farming. The historical significance adds an extra layer of interest to your hike.
The descent begins around the 6 km (3.7 miles) mark. This section can be steep in places, so take your time. The trail winds back down through the forest, eventually leading you to a picturesque stream. Follow the stream for the final kilometer (0.6 miles) back to Exford Bridge.
