Trail Overview

The trail begins near Cookham, a picturesque village that has inspired many artists, including Sir Stanley Spencer. As you set off, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in the serene beauty of the English countryside.

Winter Hill

The first significant landmark is Winter Hill, located about 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike. The ascent is gentle, and the panoramic views from the top are well worth the effort. On a clear day, you can see the River Thames meandering through the landscape below. This area is also known for its rich birdlife, so keep an eye out for red kites and other birds of prey.

Quarry Wood

Continuing on, you'll enter Quarry Wood around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark. This ancient woodland is a haven for wildlife, including deer and a variety of bird species. The path here is well-trodden but can be muddy after rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended. The wood is also home to several species of ancient trees, including oak and beech, providing a canopy of shade and a sense of timelessness.

High Wood

Around the 6 km (3.7 miles) point, you'll reach High Wood. This section of the trail is slightly more challenging due to its undulating terrain. High Wood is known for its dense foliage and the occasional sighting of foxes and badgers. The trail here is narrower and more rugged, adding a sense of adventure to your hike.

Historical Significance

The area around Cookham has a rich history dating back to the Saxon era. The village itself is mentioned in the Domesday Book, and the surrounding landscape has been shaped by centuries of agricultural and pastoral activity. As you hike, you'll pass by remnants of old stone walls and ancient boundary markers, offering a glimpse into the region's storied past.

Navigation

For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates to ensure you stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience and provide peace of mind.

Final Stretch

The final stretch of the trail brings you back towards Cookham, passing through open fields and along the banks of the River Thames. This section is relatively flat and offers a relaxing end to your hike. As you approach the village, you'll have the opportunity to explore local pubs and cafes, perfect for a post-hike refreshment.
