Saltburn Beach, Kettleness Beach and Whitby Beach Walk

Starting near Redcar and Cleveland, England, this 33 km (20.5 miles) point-to-point trail offers a captivating journey along the North Yorkshire coastline. With an elevation gain of around 700 meters (2,297 feet), the trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.

Getting There

To reach the trailhead, you can take a train to Saltburn-by-the-Sea, which is well-connected via the Northern Rail network. If you prefer driving, there are parking facilities available in Saltburn-by-the-Sea. From there, you can easily access the starting point of the trail.

Trail Overview

The trail begins at Saltburn Beach, a picturesque location known for its Victorian pier and cliff tramway. As you set off, you'll be greeted by the sound of waves crashing against the shore and the sight of surfers riding the waves. The initial stretch is relatively flat, making for a gentle start.

Saltburn to Kettleness

After approximately 8 km (5 miles), you'll reach the charming village of Staithes. This historic fishing village is famous for its narrow streets and higgledy-piggledy cottages. Take a moment to explore the village and perhaps visit the Captain Cook & Staithes Heritage Centre, which celebrates the life of the famous explorer who once lived here.

Continuing along the trail, you'll encounter a series of ascents and descents as you make your way towards Kettleness Beach. This section of the trail is about 10 km (6.2 miles) and features some steep climbs, offering panoramic views of the North Sea. Keep an eye out for seabirds such as puffins and kittiwakes, which are commonly seen along this stretch.

Kettleness to Whitby

Upon reaching Kettleness Beach, you'll find a more rugged and less frequented part of the coastline. The beach is known for its fossil-rich cliffs, so keep an eye out for ammonites and other ancient marine fossils. This section is approximately 7 km (4.3 miles) and involves a mix of beach walking and cliff-top paths.

As you approach Whitby, the trail becomes more undulating, with a final elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet). Whitby is a historic town with a rich maritime heritage. The iconic Whitby Abbey, perched on a cliff overlooking the town, is a must-visit landmark. The abbey inspired Bram Stoker's "Dracula" and offers stunning views of the surrounding area.
