The trail begins in Bledington, a charming village known for its traditional Cotswold stone cottages and the historic St. Leonard's Church. As you set off, you'll traverse through a mix of open fields, woodlands, and quaint country lanes. The initial part of the trail is relatively flat, allowing you to ease into the hike.
Around the halfway mark, approximately 6 km (3.7 miles) into the hike, you'll enter the Foxholes Nature Reserve. Managed by the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust, this reserve is a haven for wildlife and offers a rich tapestry of flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for: - Bluebells: In spring, the woodland floor is carpeted with vibrant bluebells, creating a magical atmosphere. - Birdlife: The reserve is home to a variety of bird species, including woodpeckers, nuthatches, and tawny owls. Bring binoculars for a better view. - Butterflies: During the warmer months, you might spot several butterfly species, such as the brimstone and the common blue.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always wise to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The terrain varies from flat fields to gentle inclines, with some sections that can be muddy after rain. Good hiking boots are recommended.
The region around Bledington has a rich history dating back to the medieval period. The village itself was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. As you hike, you'll pass through landscapes that have been shaped by centuries of agricultural practices and rural life.
As you loop back towards Bledington, the trail takes you through more open countryside and past several traditional farms. The final stretch is relatively easy, allowing you to enjoy the serene Cotswold scenery before arriving back at the village.
