Trail Overview

The trail begins at the edge of Sherwood Forest, a historic royal forest known for its association with the legendary Robin Hood. The forest is rich in biodiversity, so keep an eye out for native wildlife such as red deer, badgers, and a variety of bird species, including the iconic European robin.

Heron Lake

About 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Heron Lake, a serene body of water that is home to a variety of waterfowl. The lake is named after the grey herons that can often be seen fishing along its shores. There are several benches around the lake, making it a perfect spot for a short break or a picnic. The trail around the lake is well-maintained and offers stunning views of the water and surrounding woodland.

Leaky Hollow

Continuing on, you'll enter Leaky Hollow, a low-lying area that is particularly lush and green. This part of the trail can be a bit muddy after rain, so waterproof boots are recommended. Leaky Hollow is known for its abundance of wildflowers in the spring and summer months, including bluebells, primroses, and foxgloves. The hollow is also a great place to spot butterflies and other pollinators.

Historical Significance

As you hike through this area, you'll be walking in the footsteps of history. Sherwood Forest has been a royal hunting ground since the medieval period, and its ancient trees have witnessed centuries of history. The Major Oak, located a short detour from the main trail, is believed to be over 1,000 years old and is famously associated with Robin Hood. While not directly on the Heron Lake and Leaky Hollow Loop, it's worth the extra walk if you have the time.
