To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the village of Rothbury in Northumberland. The nearest significant landmark is Cragside House, a National Trust property. From Rothbury, follow signs to Cragside House, where parking is available. For those using public transport, buses run regularly from Newcastle to Rothbury. From Rothbury, it's a short taxi ride or a pleasant walk to the trailhead near Cragside House.
The trail begins near Cragside House, a Victorian country house known for its innovative use of hydroelectric power. As you start your hike, you'll be greeted by lush woodlands and the serene waters of the Tarn, a small lake that reflects the surrounding trees and sky. The first section of the trail is relatively flat, making it a gentle introduction to the hike.
About 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you'll reach the Tarn. This is a perfect spot to take a break and enjoy the tranquil scenery. The Tarn is home to various bird species, so keep your binoculars handy for some birdwatching. As you continue, the trail begins to ascend gradually, leading you towards Cragend Quarry.
At approximately 2.5 km (1.5 miles), you'll arrive at Cragend Quarry. This historical site was once a bustling quarry, providing stone for local buildings. Today, it's a fascinating place to explore, with remnants of old machinery and quarry walls that tell the story of its industrial past. The elevation gain here is noticeable but manageable, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
The trail is rich in wildlife and flora. Depending on the season, you might encounter red squirrels, deer, and a variety of wildflowers. The woodlands are predominantly made up of oak, birch, and pine trees, creating a diverse habitat for many species.
