Key Landmarks and Sections

Sutton Bank

At around 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll reach the iconic Sutton Bank escarpment. This area is renowned for its panoramic views and is a popular spot for gliding enthusiasts. The steep cliffs here are a result of glacial activity during the last Ice Age, adding a layer of geological interest to your hike.

Kilburn White Horse

Continuing along the trail, you'll come across the Kilburn White Horse at approximately 4 km (2.5 miles). This giant hill figure, carved into the limestone, dates back to 1857 and is one of the most famous landmarks in North Yorkshire. The figure is visible from miles around and offers a unique photo opportunity.

Gormire Lake

Around the halfway mark, at about 6 km (3.7 miles), you'll descend towards Gormire Lake. This natural lake is nestled in a wooded hollow and is believed to have been formed by a glacial meltwater channel. The serene setting is perfect for a short break, and you might spot various bird species, including herons and kingfishers.

Flora and Fauna

The trail is rich in biodiversity. As you walk through the mixed woodlands and open moorlands, keep an eye out for red kites soaring above and deer grazing in the underbrush. The flora varies with the seasons, from bluebells in the spring to heather in full bloom during late summer.

Historical Significance

The area around Sutton Bank has a rich history. The nearby village of Kilburn is home to the famous Mouseman furniture workshop, established by Robert Thompson in the early 20th century. Additionally, the trail passes close to the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded in 1132, which can be a worthwhile detour if time permits.

Navigation and Safety

Given the varied terrain and elevation changes, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but weather conditions can change rapidly, so be prepared with appropriate clothing and gear. The steep sections, particularly around Sutton Bank and the descent to Gormire Lake, require careful footing.

Final Stretch

The final part of the loop takes you back uphill towards the Sutton Bank National Park Centre. This section can be quite strenuous, but the well-maintained path and the promise of a hot drink at the park centre café make it worthwhile.

This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and diverse wildlife, making it an enriching experience for hikers of all levels.
