Starting near North Yorkshire, England, the Startindale Gill, Tan Hill, and Robert's Seat Loop is a captivating 17 km (approximately 10.5 miles) journey with an elevation gain of around 500 meters (1,640 feet). This loop trail is rated medium in difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the village of Goathland, which is a well-known landmark in the area. There is parking available near the trailhead. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is in Goathland, which is serviced by the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. From the station, it's a short walk to the start of the trail.

The trail begins with a gentle ascent through Startindale Gill, a picturesque valley known for its lush greenery and babbling brooks. As you progress, you'll encounter a variety of flora and fauna, including native wildflowers and bird species such as the red grouse and curlew.
At around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll reach Tan Hill, the highest point on the trail. The elevation here offers panoramic views of the surrounding North Yorkshire Moors. This is an excellent spot for a short break and some photography.
Continuing on, the trail descends slightly before climbing again towards Robert's Seat. This section is particularly scenic, with rolling hills and expansive moorland. Robert's Seat itself is a notable landmark, offering another vantage point with stunning views. Historically, this area has been used for sheep grazing for centuries, and you may spot some of the local Herdwick sheep along the way.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. Keep an eye out for deer, rabbits, and a variety of bird species. The moorland is also home to several types of heather, which bloom in vibrant purples during late summer.
The region is steeped in history. The North Yorkshire Moors have been inhabited since prehistoric times, and you may come across ancient stone circles and remnants of old settlements. The area around Tan Hill has historical significance due to its use in the wool trade during the medieval period.
The final stretch of the trail loops back towards the starting point, passing through a mix of woodland and open fields. This section is relatively flat, providing a gentle end to your hike.
