Starting near the picturesque village of Goathland in North Yorkshire, England, the Smithy Home Wood and Mallyan Spout Waterfall Loop is a delightful 12 km (7.5 miles) trail with an elevation gain of approximately 200 meters (656 feet). This loop trail offers a moderate challenge, making it suitable for hikers with some experience.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Goathland, which is well-signposted from the A169 road between Whitby and Pickering. There is ample parking available in the village. If you prefer public transport, Goathland is accessible via the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which connects with the mainline at Grosmont. Alternatively, bus services from Whitby and Pickering also stop in Goathland.
For navigation, it is highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking to ensure you stay on course.
The trail begins in Goathland, a village known for its charming stone cottages and as a filming location for the TV series "Heartbeat." From here, you will head into Smithy Home Wood, a serene woodland area filled with ancient trees and a variety of bird species. The first 3 km (1.9 miles) of the trail are relatively flat, making for a gentle start.
As you wander through Smithy Home Wood, keep an eye out for the diverse flora and fauna. The woodland is home to deer, foxes, and numerous bird species, including woodpeckers and owls. The trail here is well-marked but can be muddy after rain, so waterproof boots are advisable.
Around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you will reach the highlight of the trail: Mallyan Spout Waterfall. This stunning waterfall cascades 21 meters (69 feet) down a rocky cliff and is particularly impressive after heavy rainfall. There is a well-maintained viewing area where you can take in the beauty of the falls and snap some photos.
The area around Goathland has a rich history, dating back to the Viking era. The village itself has several historical landmarks, including St. Mary's Church, which dates back to the 19th century but is built on the site of an older medieval church. As you hike, you may also come across remnants of old stone walls and farmsteads, offering a glimpse into the region's agricultural past.
After enjoying the waterfall, the trail loops back towards Goathland. The return journey takes you through open moorland, offering expansive views of the North York Moors. This section of the trail has a few gentle inclines, contributing to the overall elevation gain. The final 4 km (2.5 miles) bring you back into the village, where you can relax and perhaps enjoy a meal at one of the local pubs.
Throughout the hike, you will encounter a variety of landscapes, from dense woodlands to open moorlands. The diversity of habitats supports a wide range of wildlife. In addition to the birds and mammals, you may also spot rare plants and fungi, particularly in the more shaded, damp areas of the wood.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical interest, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
