The trail begins at Chop Gate and quickly ascends towards Round Hill, the highest point on the trail. The initial climb is steady but manageable, offering panoramic views of the surrounding North York Moors National Park. As you ascend, you'll notice the landscape transitioning from lush woodlands to open moorland.
The North York Moors are home to a diverse range of wildlife. Keep an eye out for red grouse, curlews, and skylarks. The moorland is also a habitat for various species of butterflies and moths. In the wooded areas near the start and end of the trail, you might spot deer and a variety of woodland birds.
Given the open moorland sections, it's crucial to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is highly recommended for its detailed maps and real-time tracking features. Weather conditions can change rapidly on the moors, so be prepared with appropriate clothing and gear. The trail can be boggy in places, especially after rain, so waterproof boots are advisable.
