“Explore Goathland's 12 km trail for stunning waterfalls, historic bridges, diverse wildlife, and moderate hiking challenges.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Goathland in North Yorkshire, England, this 12 km (7.5 miles) loop trail offers a delightful mix of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and moderate physical challenge. With an elevation gain of approximately 200 meters (656 feet), the trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for hikers with a reasonable level of fitness.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Goathland, which is well-signposted from the A169. There is ample parking available in the village. If you prefer public transport, Goathland is accessible via the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which connects to the mainline at Grosmont. The village is also served by local bus routes.
Starting from Goathland, the first major landmark you'll encounter is Mallyan Spout, a stunning 21-meter (70-foot) waterfall. The path to the waterfall is well-trodden but can be slippery, especially after rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended. The waterfall is nestled in a lush, wooded ravine, offering a serene spot to take a break and enjoy the natural surroundings.
Continuing on, you'll come across the Twin Arch Bridge, an impressive piece of Victorian engineering. This bridge was constructed in the 19th century as part of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. The twin arches span a small stream and provide a picturesque backdrop for photos. The area around the bridge is rich in flora and fauna, so keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer and various bird species.
As you make your way further along the loop, you'll reach North Bridge. This historic stone bridge offers a glimpse into the region's past, having been a crucial crossing point for centuries. The surrounding area is dotted with ancient woodlands and open meadows, providing a diverse landscape to explore.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The terrain varies from well-maintained paths to more rugged sections, particularly around the waterfall and bridges. Expect some steep inclines and declines, but nothing too strenuous for a moderately fit hiker.
The trail traverses a variety of habitats, from dense woodlands to open moorland. In spring and summer, the area is awash with wildflowers, including bluebells and heather. Wildlife is abundant, with opportunities to spot red squirrels, badgers, and a variety of bird species, including the elusive nightjar.
The region around Goathland is steeped in history. The village itself has been a settlement since at least the Viking era, and the surrounding landscape is dotted with remnants of its industrial past, including old railway lines and mining sites. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which you'll encounter along the trail, is a heritage railway that offers a nostalgic glimpse into the golden age of steam travel.
This loop trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
