Starting near the charming village of Low Bentham in North Yorkshire, England, the Low Bentham Circular Path is a delightful 10 km (approximately 6.2 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet). This medium-difficulty trail offers a mix of scenic landscapes, historical landmarks, and opportunities to observe local wildlife.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to Low Bentham, North Yorkshire. There is limited parking available near the village center. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Bentham Station, which is about a 15-minute walk from the trailhead. Regular trains run from Lancaster and Leeds, making it accessible for day-trippers.
The trail begins near the village center, where you can find a few local shops and cafes to stock up on supplies or grab a quick bite. As you set off, the path initially takes you through some picturesque farmland. Keep an eye out for grazing sheep and the occasional deer.
About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you will come across the remnants of an old Roman road. This ancient pathway once connected the Roman settlements in the region and is a fascinating glimpse into the area's rich history. The trail here is relatively flat, making it a good spot to pause and take in the historical significance.
Continuing on, the trail ascends gently through a wooded area. This section is particularly beautiful in the spring when bluebells carpet the forest floor. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting species such as woodpeckers and nuthatches. After about 4 km (2.5 miles), you will reach the highest point of the trail, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Yorkshire Dales.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking to ensure you stay on course.
Descending from the high point, the path meanders through open fields and along the banks of the River Wenning. This section is a haven for wildlife, including otters and kingfishers. The riverbanks are lined with wildflowers in the summer, adding a splash of color to your hike.
As you approach the final 2 km (1.2 miles) of the loop, the trail takes you through the outskirts of Low Bentham. Here, you will pass by several traditional stone cottages and farms, offering a glimpse into rural life in North Yorkshire. The path eventually leads you back to the village center, where you can relax and reflect on your hike.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and rural charm, making it a rewarding experience for hikers of all levels.
