“Embark on the scenic 17 km Ingleborough Loop, blending natural beauty, geological wonders, and historical intrigue.”
Starting your adventure near the picturesque village of Clapham in North Yorkshire, England, the Little Ingleborough, Ingleborough Loop is a captivating 17 km (approximately 10.5 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of around 600 meters (about 1,970 feet). This trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, Clapham is accessible via the A65 road, with parking available in the village. For those using public transport, Clapham railway station is the nearest stop, located about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the village center. From the station, you can either walk or take a local taxi to the trailhead.
The trail begins in Clapham, a charming village known for its stone cottages and scenic beauty. As you set off, you'll pass through the Ingleborough Estate Nature Trail, a well-maintained path that offers a gentle introduction to the hike. This section is rich in flora and fauna, with opportunities to spot various bird species and small mammals.
Approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter Clapham Beck, a serene stream that adds to the trail's tranquil atmosphere. Following the beck, you'll soon reach Trow Gill, a dramatic limestone gorge. This natural feature is a highlight of the trail, with steep, rocky walls that create a sense of awe. The path through Trow Gill can be narrow and uneven, so take care as you navigate this section.
Continuing on, around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll come across Gaping Gill, one of the largest underground chambers in Britain. This natural wonder is a popular spot for caving enthusiasts, and during certain times of the year, local caving clubs set up winches to allow visitors to descend into the cavern. Even if you don't venture underground, the site is worth a visit for its sheer scale and geological significance.
The trail then begins its ascent towards Little Ingleborough. This section is the most challenging part of the hike, with a steady climb that gains approximately 300 meters (984 feet) in elevation over 3 km (1.9 miles). The path is well-marked but can be rocky and steep in places. As you climb, the landscape opens up, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Reaching the summit of Ingleborough, one of the Yorkshire Dales' famous Three Peaks, is a rewarding experience. At 723 meters (2,372 feet) above sea level, the summit provides breathtaking 360-degree views. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Lake District and the Irish Sea. The summit plateau is also home to unique alpine flora and is a great spot for a well-deserved break.
From the summit, the trail descends towards the village of Ingleton before looping back to Clapham. The descent is gradual, passing through open moorland and fields. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including red grouse and curlews. The final stretch of the trail takes you through farmland and back into the wooded areas near Clapham.
The region around Ingleborough is steeped in history. The summit itself was once the site of an Iron Age hill fort, and remnants of ancient stone walls can still be seen. The village of Clapham has a rich history dating back to the Domesday Book and features several historical buildings, including the 19th-century St. James' Church.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking to ensure you stay on the right path throughout your hike.
This trail offers a blend of natural beauty, geological wonders, and historical intrigue, making it a must-do for any hiking enthusiast exploring the Yorkshire Dales.
