Trail Overview

The trail begins near Levisham village and quickly ascends onto Levisham Moor. The initial climb is gentle, allowing you to ease into the hike. As you traverse the moor, you'll be treated to expansive views of the surrounding countryside. The moorland is a haven for wildlife, including birds such as curlews and lapwings, so keep your binoculars handy.

Hole of Horcum

Around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark, you'll reach the Hole of Horcum, a dramatic natural amphitheater that is 400 feet deep and about 3/4 mile across. According to local legend, the Hole of Horcum was formed when a giant scooped up a handful of earth to throw at his wife during an argument. Geologically, it is a classic example of a "devil's punchbowl," formed by the action of spring water on the underlying rock.

Historical Significance

The area is steeped in history. Levisham Moor is dotted with ancient burial mounds and earthworks, some dating back to the Bronze Age. As you hike, you'll pass by these historical landmarks, offering a glimpse into the region's ancient past.

Navigation and Waypoints

The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking. Key waypoints to look out for include the Levisham Moor trig point and the viewpoint over the Hole of Horcum.

Flora and Fauna

The moorland is covered in heather, which blooms in late summer, turning the landscape into a sea of purple. You might also encounter wild ponies grazing on the moor. As you descend into the Hole of Horcum, the vegetation changes, with more sheltered areas supporting a variety of trees and shrubs.

Final Stretch

The return leg of the loop takes you through the scenic Newtondale, a deep valley carved by glacial meltwater. This section is more wooded, providing a contrast to the open moorland. The trail then loops back towards Levisham, offering a gentle descent to finish your hike.

Practical Tips

• Wear sturdy hiking boots, as the terrain can be uneven.
• Bring water and snacks, as there are no facilities along the trail.
• Check the weather forecast before you go; the moor can be exposed to the elements.
• If you're hiking in late summer, be prepared for midges.

This trail offers a mix of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for those who undertake it.
