The trail begins at the car park, where you can catch your first glimpse of the iconic Kilburn White Horse, a large hill figure carved into the limestone of Sutton Bank. This landmark is not only a striking visual but also holds historical significance, having been created in 1857 by local schoolmaster John Hodgson and his students.
From the car park, the trail ascends gradually through a mixed woodland area. The initial climb is about 50 meters (164 feet) over the first 0.5 km (0.3 miles), offering a moderate challenge. The path is well-marked, but it's advisable to use HiiKER for navigation to ensure you stay on track.
At approximately 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you'll reach the base of the Kilburn White Horse. This is a perfect spot for a short break and some photographs. The white chalk figure is 314 feet long and 228 feet high, making it one of the largest hill figures in England.
As you continue along the loop, you'll traverse through areas rich in native flora and fauna. Look out for species such as red kites soaring above and various woodland birds. The area is also home to wildflowers like bluebells and primroses, especially vibrant in the spring.
The trail then leads you to a viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of the Vale of York and the North York Moors. This section is relatively flat and provides a welcome respite after the initial climb. The viewpoint is located around 1.5 km (0.9 miles) into the hike.
The final stretch of the trail descends back towards the car park, completing the loop. This descent is about 50 meters (164 feet) over the last 0.5 km (0.3 miles), making it a gentle and enjoyable end to your hike.
