To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Hutton-le-Hole, which is well-signposted from major roads in North Yorkshire. There is a car park near the village center, close to the Ryedale Folk Museum, which serves as a convenient starting point. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is in Pickering, about 11 km (7 miles) away. From Pickering, you can take a local bus to Hutton-le-Hole.
For navigation, it is highly recommended to use HiiKER, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool will enhance your hiking experience.
Starting from the car park near the Ryedale Folk Museum, the trail initially takes you through the charming village of Hutton-le-Hole. This area is known for its traditional stone cottages and the scenic Hutton Beck, which meanders through the village. As you leave the village, the path begins a gentle ascent, offering views of the surrounding moorland.
At around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark, you will reach the highest point of the trail, approximately 100 meters (328 feet) above sea level. Here, the landscape opens up to expansive views of the North York Moors. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the scenery. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including grouse and curlew, which are common in this area.
As you descend, you will pass several historical landmarks. One notable site is the remains of an old stone cross, believed to date back to medieval times. This cross once served as a waymarker for travelers crossing the moors. Further along, you will encounter the remnants of ancient dry stone walls, which are a testament to the region's agricultural history.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. In spring and summer, the moorland is adorned with heather and wildflowers, attracting a variety of pollinators. You may also spot red grouse, lapwings, and occasionally, a kestrel hovering above in search of prey.
The final section of the loop brings you back towards Hutton-le-Hole, descending gently through a mix of open fields and wooded areas. The path here can be muddy after rain, so appropriate footwear is recommended. As you approach the village, you will cross Hutton Beck once more, completing the loop back at the car park.
This loop trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and a moderate challenge, making it a rewarding hike for those exploring the North Yorkshire region.
