The trail begins near the charming hamlet of Yockenthwaite, nestled in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. As you set off, you'll follow the River Wharfe, a serene and meandering river that provides a tranquil start to your hike. The initial section is relatively flat, allowing you to ease into the journey while enjoying the lush greenery and the soothing sounds of the river.
At around 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter the first significant ascent as you head towards Horse Head Moor. This section is steep and can be challenging, but the effort is well worth it. As you climb, you'll gain approximately 200 meters (656 feet) in elevation, offering increasingly expansive views of the surrounding dales and valleys.
Upon reaching the summit of Horse Head Moor, at roughly 4 km (2.5 miles) into the hike, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Pennine range. This is an excellent spot for a short break and some photography.
The area around Yockenthwaite is steeped in history. The village itself is home to ancient stone circles and remnants of old farming practices that date back centuries. As you hike, you'll pass by traditional dry stone walls and old barns, offering a glimpse into the region's agricultural past.
The Yorkshire Dales are renowned for their rich biodiversity. Keep an eye out for native wildlife such as red grouse, lapwings, and curlews. The moorland sections are particularly good for birdwatching. In the river sections, you might spot otters and various species of fish.
Given the varied terrain, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but weather conditions can change rapidly, especially on the moorland. Ensure you have appropriate clothing and gear, including waterproofs and sturdy hiking boots.
The descent from Horse Head Moor takes you back towards the River Wharfe, completing the loop. This section is less strenuous, allowing you to enjoy the final leg of your hike at a leisurely pace. As you approach Yockenthwaite, take a moment to appreciate the serene beauty of the river and the surrounding landscape.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and physical challenge, making it a must-do for any avid hiker exploring the Yorkshire Dales.
