Loop
“A colourful Swaledale circuit from Reeth weaves past stone walls and open hills with rewarding views.”
This medium-rated loop of around 12 km (7.5 miles) with roughly 300 metres (985 feet) of ascent is best understood as a Swaledale circuit based from Reeth, North Yorkshire, near the village green and main parking area in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Reeth is the nearest clear landmark and practical trailhead for walks that head out toward Cuckoo Hill, Arkle Beck, and the lower slopes beneath Fremington Edge, which is where this kind of route typically unfolds. Reeth itself is a well-known walking base with parking, visitor facilities, and bus links, making it the most useful start point for planning. (carfreewalks.org)
Expect a varied outing rather than a single sustained climb. The route is likely to begin gently from Reeth on field paths, lanes, or riverside tracks before building into steeper sections around Cuckoo Hill and the rising ground above the dale. With 12 km and 300 metres of ascent, the challenge comes less from altitude and more from the repeated undulations, uneven surfaces, and the possibility of wet or slippery ground after rain. In dry conditions this is a very manageable half-day walk for reasonably fit hikers, but in poor weather the exposed sections can feel much more serious than the numbers suggest. (carfreewalks.org)
The first few kilometres are usually the easiest, with classic Swaledale scenery setting the tone: stone-built village edges, enclosed pastures, dry-stone walls, and broad views opening across the valley. Paths in this area can alternate between grassy trods, compacted farm tracks, stony bridleways, and short stretches of quiet road. If your loop uses the line toward Cuckoo Hill from Reeth, you can expect a noticeable climb fairly early on, with the gradient steepening as you leave the valley floor and gain a better view back over the village and surrounding dales. (carfreewalks.org)
Around the middle of the walk, the route should feel more open and more exposed. This is where the landscape becomes especially characteristic of the Yorkshire Dales: rougher pasture, moorland edges, scattered field barns, and long walls running across the hillside. If the loop reaches higher ground near the shoulder of Fremington Edge or adjacent slopes, the reward is a much wider panorama over Swaledale and toward Arkengarthdale. Wind can be a factor here even on otherwise calm days, and low cloud can reduce visibility quickly, so it is worth having the route loaded in HiiKER before setting out. (carfreewalks.org)
The return leg is often the most relaxed part of this kind of circuit, descending through meadows and farmland toward Reeth. Descents here are not usually technical, but they can be slick underfoot where livestock have churned gateways or where stone flags and compacted earth hold moisture. Trekking poles can be useful if rain is forecast or if you prefer extra stability on downhill sections. (hiiker.app)
Reeth is more than just a convenient start point. It is one of Swaledale’s best-known villages, centred on a large green and surrounded by traditional stone buildings. The village is closely tied to the lead-mining history of Swaledale and Arkengarthdale, and that industrial past still shapes the wider landscape through old spoil heaps, ruined workings, and the pattern of tracks and walls across the hills. The Swaledale Museum in Reeth is one of the best places to understand the farming and mining heritage of the area if you want context before or after the walk. (hiiker.app)
Cuckoo Hill is a named feature just above Reeth and is associated with field barns, open pasture, and excellent views back across the valley. It is not a dramatic summit in the mountain sense, but it is exactly the kind of elevated shoulder that gives this walk its character: a
