“Experience breathtaking views, historical landmarks, and diverse wildlife on the moderately challenging 13 km Hasty Bank Loop.”
Starting near North Yorkshire, England, the Hasty Bank, Wain Stones, and Chop Hill Loop is a captivating 13 km (8 miles) trail with an elevation gain of approximately 500 meters (1,640 feet). This loop trail offers a medium difficulty rating, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the village of Great Broughton, where you can find parking near Clay Bank Car Park. For those using public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the town of Stokesley. From Stokesley, you can take a local bus to Great Broughton and then a short taxi ride to the trailhead.
The trail begins at Clay Bank Car Park, where you will immediately be greeted by the stunning views of the North York Moors. As you start your ascent, the first significant landmark you'll encounter is Hasty Bank. This section involves a steady climb, gaining around 200 meters (656 feet) in elevation over the first 2 km (1.2 miles).
Approximately 3 km (1.8 miles) into the hike, you will reach the Wain Stones, a dramatic rock formation that offers panoramic views of the surrounding moorland. This is an excellent spot for a short break and some photography. The Wain Stones are not just a natural wonder; they also hold historical significance, having been a landmark for travelers and traders for centuries.
Continuing on, the trail takes you towards Chop Hill. This section is relatively flat, allowing you to catch your breath after the initial climb. The path meanders through heather-covered moorland, which is particularly beautiful in late summer when the heather is in full bloom. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including red grouse and skylarks.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always wise to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time tracking. The weather in the North York Moors can be unpredictable, so come prepared with appropriate clothing and gear.
As you loop back towards the starting point, you'll descend gradually, losing about 300 meters (984 feet) in elevation over the final 4 km (2.5 miles). This section offers more wooded areas, where you might spot deer and other woodland creatures. The path can be muddy after rain, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended.
The North York Moors have a rich history, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Bronze Age. The moorland was once a hub for ironstone mining, and remnants of this industrial past can still be seen along the trail. The area is also dotted with ancient burial mounds and stone circles, adding a layer of historical intrigue to your hike.
This loop trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for those who undertake it.
