To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to Sutton Bank National Park Centre, which is the nearest significant landmark. For those using public transport, take a train to Thirsk Station, and from there, a local bus or taxi can take you to Sutton Bank.
The trail begins at the Sutton Bank National Park Centre, where you can find parking and visitor facilities. From here, the path leads you through a mix of woodland and open fields, offering stunning views of the North York Moors.
About 4 km (2.5 miles) into the hike, you will reach Gormire Lake, a serene natural lake surrounded by dense woodland. The lake is a great spot for a short break, where you can enjoy the tranquility and perhaps spot some local wildlife, including various bird species and small mammals.
Continuing on, around the 8 km (5 miles) mark, you will come across the Yorkshire Gliding Club Airfield. This is a unique feature of the trail, where you can often see gliders taking off and landing. The airfield has a rich history, having been established in the 1930s, and it remains one of the premier gliding sites in the UK.
The area around Sutton Bank has a deep historical significance. The escarpment itself was formed during the last Ice Age, and the surrounding moorland has been inhabited since prehistoric times. You may come across ancient earthworks and remnants of old settlements as you hike.
