Trail Highlights

Mallyan Spout Waterfall

One of the first significant landmarks you'll encounter is the Mallyan Spout Waterfall, located about 2 km (1.2 miles) from the trailhead. This stunning 21-meter (69-foot) waterfall is a must-see, especially after a period of rain when the water flow is at its peak. The path to the waterfall can be slippery, so take care and wear appropriate footwear.

Historical Significance

Goathland itself is steeped in history, famously serving as the fictional village of Aidensfield in the TV series "Heartbeat." As you hike, you'll pass by several historical sites, including old railway lines and ancient stone bridges. The village's history dates back to the Viking era, and remnants of this can still be seen in the local architecture and layout.

Nature and Wildlife

The trail meanders through a variety of landscapes, including open moorland, dense woodlands, and serene riversides. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer, rabbits, and a variety of bird species. The moorlands are particularly known for their heather, which blooms in late summer, painting the landscape in vibrant purples.

Navigation

While the trail is generally well-marked, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The app provides detailed maps and real-time location tracking, which can be particularly useful in the more remote sections of the trail.

Elevation and Terrain

The trail features a mix of flat sections and more challenging inclines. The most significant elevation gain occurs in the first half of the hike, with a steady climb that offers rewarding views of the surrounding countryside. The terrain varies from well-trodden paths to rocky and uneven ground, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended.

Practical Tips

• Weather: The weather in North Yorkshire can be unpredictable, so pack layers and waterproofs.
• Supplies: There are limited facilities along the trail, so bring enough water and snacks.
