Trail Highlights

As you set off from the trailhead near the lighthouse, you'll immediately be greeted by stunning coastal views. The lighthouse itself, painted in distinctive red and white stripes, is a must-see and offers a great photo opportunity.

Historical Significance

One of the most fascinating aspects of this trail is its proximity to the site where the oldest human footprints outside Africa were discovered. These footprints, dating back around 850,000 years, were found on the beach near Happisburgh and have provided invaluable insights into early human migration. While the exact location of the footprints is not accessible, the trail offers interpretive signs that provide information about this significant archaeological find.

Nature and Wildlife

As you continue along the loop, you'll traverse a variety of landscapes, including coastal cliffs, sandy beaches, and lush meadows. Keep an eye out for the diverse birdlife that inhabits this area. The cliffs are home to nesting seabirds, while the meadows and hedgerows provide habitat for owls, particularly the barn owl, which is often seen hunting at dusk.

Navigation and Safety

The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, offering detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on course. Given the coastal location, weather conditions can change rapidly, so be prepared with appropriate clothing and check the weather forecast before setting out.

Points of Interest

About halfway through the loop, you'll come across the ruins of St. Mary's Church, a poignant reminder of the area's rich history. The church, which dates back to the medieval period, offers a peaceful spot to rest and reflect.

As you near the end of the loop, you'll return to the coastal path, where you can enjoy more breathtaking views of the North Sea. The trail concludes back at the lighthouse, where you can take a moment to appreciate the journey and perhaps visit the small visitor center to learn more about the area's history and wildlife.

This trail offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and wildlife, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
