Key Landmarks and Points of Interest

• Philips Park Cemetery: As you start your hike, you'll pass by the historic Philips Park Cemetery. Established in 1866, it is one of the oldest municipal cemeteries in Manchester and offers a glimpse into the city's Victorian past. The cemetery is home to several notable graves and memorials, including those of war heroes and local dignitaries.

• River Medlock: Approximately 0.5 km (0.31 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter the River Medlock. The trail runs parallel to the river for a short stretch, providing picturesque views and the soothing sounds of flowing water. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as ducks and herons that frequent the riverbanks.

• Woodland Area: Around the 1 km (0.62 miles) mark, the trail enters a dense woodland area. This section is particularly beautiful in the spring and autumn when the foliage is either budding or changing colors. The woodland is home to a variety of bird species, so bringing a pair of binoculars could enhance your experience.

• Open Parkland: As you continue, the trail opens up into a more expansive parkland area. This section is ideal for a leisurely stroll and offers plenty of spots to sit and enjoy a picnic. The open space is also popular with local dog walkers, so expect to see some friendly canines along the way.

Navigation and Safety

Given the trail's proximity to urban areas, mobile signal is generally reliable. However, it's always a good idea to have a navigation tool like HiiKER on hand to ensure you stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but some sections can become muddy after rain, so appropriate footwear is recommended.
