Starting near the bustling city of London, the Wandsworth to Croydon Walk spans approximately 20 km (12.4 miles) with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet). This point-to-point trail offers a medium difficulty rating, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
#### Wandsworth Common to Tooting Bec Common After leaving Wandsworth Common, the trail takes you through residential areas before reaching Tooting Bec Common, approximately 5 km (3.1 miles) into the hike. This section is relatively flat and offers a mix of paved paths and grassy trails. Tooting Bec Common is another excellent spot for birdwatching and has a large lake where you might see swans and ducks.
#### Historical Significance: Tooting Bec Lido As you traverse Tooting Bec Common, you'll come across Tooting Bec Lido, one of the oldest and largest open-air swimming pools in the UK. Opened in 1906, it’s a significant historical landmark and a great place to take a short break.
#### Streatham Common and The Rookery Continuing south, the trail leads you to Streatham Common, around 10 km (6.2 miles) from the start. This section involves a slight elevation gain as you approach The Rookery, a beautifully landscaped garden with a rich history dating back to the 18th century. The Rookery is an ideal spot for a picnic and offers stunning views of the surrounding area.
#### Norwood Grove and Biggin Wood As you leave Streatham Common, the trail takes you through Norwood Grove and Biggin Wood, adding another 5 km (3.1 miles) to your journey. These wooded areas provide a serene environment and a chance to see various flora and fauna. The paths here can be a bit uneven, so watch your step.
