Church of St Peter and St Paul

The trail begins at the Church of St Peter and St Paul, a historical gem dating back to the 12th century. This church is a fine example of Norman architecture, and its serene churchyard is a peaceful place to start your hike. Take a moment to appreciate the intricate stonework and the tranquil atmosphere before setting off.

Devil's Den

About 1.5 km (0.9 miles) into the hike, you'll encounter Devil's Den, a Neolithic burial chamber that dates back to around 2500 BC. This ancient dolmen is one of the oldest structures in the area and offers a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric life. The large capstone, supported by two upright stones, is an impressive sight and a great spot for a short break.

Figgs Wood

Continuing on, you'll enter Figgs Wood around the 2.5 km (1.6 miles) mark. This woodland area is rich in biodiversity, with a variety of native trees such as oak, ash, and beech. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The trail through Figgs Wood is well-marked but can be muddy after rain, so appropriate footwear is recommended.

Navigation and Terrain

The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The terrain is relatively flat with no significant elevation gain, making it suitable for hikers of moderate fitness levels. However, some sections can be uneven and slippery, especially after rain, so caution is advised.
