This point-to-point trail boasts minimal elevation gain, making it accessible to a wide range of hikers, though the terrain and distance give it a medium difficulty rating.

Getting to the Trailhead

The trailhead is situated near the village of Wellingore, which lies just off the A607. For those arriving by car, parking can be found in the village or near the starting point of the hike. Public transport options include local bus services that connect Wellingore with the nearby city of Lincoln and other surrounding towns.

The Journey Begins

Setting out from Wellingore, hikers will follow the well-marked Viking Way, a long-distance footpath that runs through Lincolnshire. The initial stretch of the trail meanders through rolling farmland and offers views of the Lincoln Edge, a prominent limestone escarpment.

Historical Significance

The Viking Way itself is steeped in history, named after the Norse invaders who once sailed up the Trent and anchored their longships. As you walk, imagine the Viking influence on this land, with the trail crossing paths that may have been used by these ancient seafarers.

Flora and Fauna

The trail provides an opportunity to observe the diverse wildlife of the region. Keep an eye out for birds of prey circling overhead, and in the hedgerows and woodlands, you might spot various species of songbirds. The changing seasons bring different wildflowers, adding splashes of color to the landscape.

Notable Landmarks

Approximately halfway through the hike, the trail passes through the village of Harmston, where hikers can admire the All Saints Church, dating back to the 12th century. Continuing on, the path offers occasional glimpses of the historic city of Lincoln, with its cathedral dominating the skyline.

Approaching Waddington

As you approach Waddington, the trail descends slightly into the Witham Valley. Here, the terrain flattens out, and the walk concludes in the charming village of Waddington. The village is home to the Royal Air Force Waddington, an operational base that has played a significant role in British military history.

Facilities and Amenities

Throughout the hike, there are limited facilities, so it's advisable to carry sufficient water and snacks. Wellingore and Waddington both offer amenities such as pubs and shops for refreshments before or after your hike.

Navigation

For navigation purposes, the HiiKER app provides detailed maps and trail information to ensure you stay on the right path. It's recommended to download the trail map beforehand, as some areas may have limited mobile reception.
