Points of Interest

Nature and Wildlife

The Skellingthorpe Circular Walk takes you through a variety of landscapes, including woodlands, open fields, and along the Fossdyke Canal. The woodlands are particularly enchanting, with a mix of deciduous trees that provide a canopy of green in the spring and summer, and a riot of color in the autumn. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The canal area is a great spot for birdwatching, with waterfowl and other aquatic birds frequently spotted.

Historical Significance

As you walk, you'll encounter several points of historical interest. The Fossdyke Canal, which you'll follow for a portion of the trail, is one of the oldest canals in England, dating back to Roman times. This ancient waterway was originally constructed to connect the River Trent to the River Witham, facilitating trade and transport. Walking along the canal, you can almost feel the history beneath your feet.

Another notable landmark is the Skellingthorpe Old Wood, a remnant of the ancient woodland that once covered much of Lincolnshire. This area has been managed for centuries and offers a glimpse into the natural history of the region. The wood is home to a variety of flora and fauna, making it a delightful spot for nature enthusiasts.

Trail Conditions and Tips

The trail is mostly flat, with well-trodden paths that can become muddy after rain, so appropriate footwear is recommended. There are several benches along the route, providing perfect spots to rest and take in the scenery. While the trail is suitable for most fitness levels, the moderate rating is due to the length and the potential for uneven terrain in some sections.

Navigation and Safety

While the trail is well-marked, carrying a map or using the HiiKER app is advisable, especially if you're unfamiliar with the area. Mobile reception is generally good, but it's always wise to inform someone of your plans before setting out. Bring water and snacks, as there are limited facilities once you leave the village.

The Skellingthorpe Circular Walk offers a wonderful blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and peaceful countryside, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
