Key Landmarks and Sections

Woodhall Spa to River Bain

Starting from Woodhall Spa, the first section of the trail takes you through lush woodlands and open fields. About 2 km (1.2 miles) in, you'll encounter the River Bain, a tranquil waterway that meanders through the Lincolnshire countryside. This section is relatively flat, making it a gentle introduction to the hike.

Along the River Bain

Following the river, you'll walk another 3 km (1.9 miles) through a mix of shaded paths and open meadows. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including kingfishers, herons, and various species of butterflies. The riverbanks are also home to a variety of wildflowers, making this a particularly scenic part of the trail.

Historical Significance

Around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll come across the remains of an old Roman road, a testament to the area's rich history. The Viking Way itself is named after the Norse invaders who once traversed these lands. As you walk, imagine the ancient footsteps that have trodden this path before you.

Ascending to the High Point

The trail then begins a gentle ascent, gaining about 50 meters (164 feet) over the next 2 km (1.2 miles). It's a great spot to take a break and soak in the scenery.

Return Loop

The final 3 km (1.9 miles) of the trail loop back towards Woodhall Spa. This section is mostly downhill, making for a pleasant and easy return. You'll pass through more woodland areas, where you might spot deer and other woodland creatures. The path eventually leads you back to the village, where you can enjoy a well-deserved rest.
