Starting near the picturesque village of Wycollar in Lancashire, England, this 5 km (approximately 3.1 miles) loop trail offers a delightful mix of natural beauty and historical intrigue. With an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet), it is rated as a medium difficulty hike, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Wycollar, which is accessible via the A6068 road. There is a small car park near the village where you can leave your vehicle. If you prefer public transport, the nearest significant town is Colne, which has a train station. From Colne, you can take a local bus or taxi to Wycollar.
As you set off from Wycollar, you will immediately be immersed in the serene countryside. The village itself is steeped in history, with the ruins of Wycollar Hall being a notable landmark. This hall is believed to have inspired Ferndean Manor in Charlotte Brontë's novel "Jane Eyre." The ancient packhorse bridge and the Clam Bridge, which dates back to the Iron Age, are also worth exploring.
The trail meanders through lush meadows and dense woodlands, offering ample opportunities to spot local wildlife. Keep an eye out for deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species, including kestrels and owls. The flora is equally diverse, with wildflowers carpeting the meadows in spring and summer.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The path initially follows the Wycollar Beck, providing a gentle start before gradually ascending into the surrounding hills.
Around the halfway point, you will join a section of the Pendle Way. This part of the trail offers panoramic views of the Pendle Hill, a site famous for its association with the Pendle Witch Trials of 1612. The hill itself is a prominent feature in the landscape and adds a touch of mystique to your hike.
As you loop back towards Wycollar, the trail descends gently, offering a relaxing end to your hike. The final stretch takes you through more woodland and past a few quaint farmhouses, bringing you back to the village where you started.
This trail is a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical significance, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
