Getting to the Trailhead

The trailhead is accessible by both public transport and car. For those opting for public transport, buses frequently run from nearby towns to the Rivington area. If driving, parking is available near the Rivington Hall Barn, which is a recognizable landmark close to the start of the hike. From here, you can easily find the marked trailhead and begin your journey.

The Trail Experience

As you set off from the trailhead, the path will lead you through a mix of terrains, including wooded areas and open moorland. The initial section of the trail is relatively gentle, allowing hikers to warm up as they move towards the more challenging ascents ahead.

Historical Significance

The area is steeped in history, with Rivington Pike being one of its most notable historical landmarks. The Pike is home to a tower that dates back to 1733, originally built as a hunting lodge. As you reach the summit of Rivington Pike, at about 363 meters (1191 feet), you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, including the West Pennine Moors.

Continuing on, the trail will take you towards Winter Hill, which is synonymous with the Winter Hill TV Mast, an important broadcasting site. The hill itself has a rich history, including a notable mass trespass in 1896, which was a pivotal event in the movement for public access to the moors.

Nature and Wildlife

Throughout the hike, keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that inhabits the area. The moorland and woodlands are home to a variety of birds, including curlews and skylarks, while the reservoirs and wetlands attract ducks, geese, and other waterfowl.

Navigation and Preparation

To navigate the trail, HiiKER is an excellent tool for ensuring you stay on the right path. It's advisable to download the trail map on HiiKER before you set out, as mobile reception can be spotty in rural and elevated areas.

Proper preparation is key for this hike. Ensure you have adequate water, as there are limited sources along the route, and pack layers of clothing to adapt to the changeable weather conditions that are common in this region. Good hiking boots are essential for the varied terrain, and a map and compass are recommended as backup navigation aids.

Notable Sections of the Trail

As you approach the halfway point, the trail descends into the valley, where you'll find the Yarrow Reservoir. This is an ideal spot for a rest and perhaps a picnic while enjoying the serene water views.

The loop will then lead you back towards the starting point, with a gradual descent that allows for reflection on the sights and experiences of the day. Keep in mind that the weather on the return can be quite different from when you started, so be prepared for quick changes in conditions.

By the time you complete the loop, you'll have experienced a rich tapestry of Lancashire's natural and historical heritage, making the Winter Hill and Rivington Pike Loop a memorable hike.
