Cowm Reservoir

Continuing on, around the 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) mark, you'll come across Cowm Reservoir. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the serene waters. The reservoir is surrounded by moorland, providing a stark but beautiful contrast to the lush greenery you encountered earlier.

Brown Wardle Hill

As you approach the halfway point, you'll begin the ascent to Brown Wardle Hill. This section is the most challenging part of the hike, with a significant elevation gain. However, the effort is well worth it. At the summit, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, including the Pennines to the east.

Historical Significance

Wildlife and Flora

The trail is abundant with wildlife. Keep an eye out for kestrels and buzzards soaring overhead, and if you're lucky, you might spot a deer or two in the more wooded areas. The flora is equally diverse, with wildflowers blooming in the spring and summer months, adding a splash of color to the landscape.

Navigation and Safety

Given the varied terrain and elevation changes, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can provide extra assurance. Wear sturdy hiking boots and bring layers, as the weather can change rapidly, especially at higher elevations.

Final Stretch

The last part of the trail takes you through more pastoral landscapes, passing by quaint farms and open fields. As you loop back towards Whitworth, the terrain becomes gentler, allowing you to cool down and reflect on the diverse landscapes you've traversed.
