“Discover the perfect blend of nature, history, and challenge on Barley's scenic 11 km loop trail.”
Starting near the quaint village of Barley in Lancashire, England, this 11 km (approximately 6.8 miles) loop trail offers a delightful mix of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge. With an elevation gain of around 300 meters (approximately 984 feet), hikers can expect a rewarding climb with panoramic views.### Getting There To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Barley, where parking is available at the Barley Car Park, located near the Barley Mow pub. If you prefer public transport, the nearest train station is in Nelson, from where you can catch a bus to Barley. The bus stop is conveniently located near the village center, just a short walk from the trailhead.### The Ascent to Pendle Hill The trail begins with a gradual ascent through lush meadows and past the serene Upper and Lower Ogden Reservoirs. These reservoirs are not only picturesque but also serve as a habitat for various bird species, making them a great spot for birdwatching. After approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), you will start the more strenuous climb up Pendle Hill.Pendle Hill is steeped in history, most notably associated with the Pendle Witch Trials of 1612. As you ascend, take a moment to appreciate the historical significance of the area. The climb is challenging but manageable, with well-marked paths and occasional stone steps to aid your progress. The summit, at 557 meters (1,827 feet) above sea level, offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside, including the Forest of Bowland and, on clear days, even the Yorkshire Dales.### Descending and Looping Back After soaking in the views from the summit, the descent begins. The path down is less steep but requires careful footing, especially in wet conditions. As you descend, you'll pass through heather-covered moorlands and eventually re-enter the lush, green valleys.### Ogden Reservoirs and Wildlife The trail then loops back towards the Upper and Lower Ogden Reservoirs. These reservoirs are a haven for wildlife, including ducks, geese, and occasionally, herons. The path around the reservoirs is relatively flat and offers a peaceful contrast to the earlier climb. This section of the trail is perfect for a leisurely stroll, allowing you to enjoy the tranquil waters and the surrounding woodland.### Navigation and Safety For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time updates. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool ensures you stay on track, especially in areas where the path may be less defined.### Final Stretch The final stretch of the loop brings you back to Barley, where you can relax and perhaps enjoy a meal or a drink at the Barley Mow pub. This trail offers a perfect blend of physical challenge, natural beauty, and historical significance, making it a must-do for any hiking enthusiast visiting Lancashire.
