“Embark on a scenic 4 km loop trail around Calf Hey Reservoir, rich in history and wildlife.”
Starting near the picturesque Lancashire, England, the Calf Hey Reservoir trail offers a delightful 4 km (2.5 miles) loop with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet). This medium-difficulty trail is perfect for those looking to enjoy a moderate hike with scenic views and historical significance.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to the nearest significant landmark, the Clough Head Visitor Centre, located off Grane Road (A56). For those using public transport, the closest bus stop is at the Holden Arms, served by local bus routes. From there, it's a short walk to the visitor centre and the start of the trail.
The trail begins at the Clough Head Visitor Centre, where you can find parking and basic amenities. As you set off, you'll be greeted by a well-marked path that winds through a mix of woodland and open moorland. The initial section is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up before you start to gain elevation.
About 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you'll come across the Calf Hey Reservoir itself. This reservoir was constructed in the mid-19th century to supply water to the nearby towns and has since become a haven for local wildlife. Keep an eye out for various bird species, including herons and kingfishers, which are often seen around the water's edge.
Continuing along the trail, you'll pass through areas rich in flora, including heather and gorse, which bloom spectacularly in late summer. The path then begins to ascend gently, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. At approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), you'll reach the highest point of the trail, where you can take a moment to enjoy the vistas before descending back towards the reservoir.
The area around Calf Hey Reservoir is steeped in history. During your hike, you'll notice remnants of old stone walls and farmsteads, which date back to the 18th and 19th centuries. These ruins are a testament to the region's agricultural past. Additionally, the reservoir itself is part of a network of reservoirs built during the Industrial Revolution to support the burgeoning textile industry in Lancashire.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on course. The terrain can be uneven in places, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Also, be prepared for changing weather conditions, as the area can be quite exposed.
As you make your way back towards the starting point, you'll traverse through more wooded areas, where you might spot deer and other small mammals. The diversity of plant life is also notable, with various species of ferns and wildflowers lining the path.
The last leg of the trail brings you back to the Clough Head Visitor Centre, completing the loop. Here, you can take advantage of the picnic areas to relax and reflect on your hike. The entire loop, with its mix of natural beauty and historical intrigue, offers a rewarding experience for hikers of all levels.
