We did it "backwards" which meant we started in the wilderness and slowly made our way to civilisation and a pint at the Dolphin. Really enjoyed it but it's not for you if you like hills and solitude as the closer you get to Preston, the more people you'll see. It's mostly relatively flat too given that it follows the river a lot.
