“Explore Kent's countryside on a 12 km loop blending natural beauty, history, and moderate challenge.”
Starting near the charming village of Westerham in Kent, England, this 12 km (approximately 7.5 miles) loop trail offers a delightful mix of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and moderate physical challenge. With an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet), hikers can expect a varied terrain that includes gentle slopes, woodland paths, and open fields.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Westerham, which is conveniently located just off the A25. There is parking available in the village, particularly near the Westerham Green. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Oxted, from where you can take a bus or taxi to Westerham.
Starting from Westerham, you'll immediately be immersed in history. The village is known for its connections to Sir Winston Churchill, who lived at nearby Chartwell. Before you set off, take a moment to explore the village green and the statue of Churchill.
As you leave Westerham, the trail takes you through the picturesque hamlet of French Street. This area is dotted with charming cottages and offers a glimpse into traditional English rural life. The path here is relatively flat and easy, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging sections ahead.
One of the highlights of this loop is Emmett's Garden, a National Trust property renowned for its stunning displays of rhododendrons and azaleas. The garden sits atop one of the highest points in Kent, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. This is a great spot to take a break and enjoy a picnic. The elevation gain here is noticeable but manageable, with the climb rewarding you with breathtaking vistas.
The trail meanders through a variety of landscapes, including ancient woodlands and open fields. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The woodlands are particularly beautiful in the spring when bluebells carpet the forest floor.
The area around Westerham is steeped in history. In addition to Churchill's Chartwell, the trail passes near Squerryes Court, a historic manor house dating back to the 17th century. Although not directly on the trail, it's worth a detour if you have the time.
While the trail is well-marked, it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on course.
The final part of the loop brings you back towards Westerham, passing through more open fields and offering a gentle descent. As you approach the village, you'll have a chance to reflect on the diverse landscapes and rich history you've encountered along the way.
This trail is perfect for those looking to experience the best of Kent's countryside, with a mix of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and moderate physical challenge.
