The trail begins near Sundridge and quickly immerses you in the picturesque Kent countryside. As you start, you'll pass through lush woodlands and open fields, offering a variety of flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for native bird species and small mammals that inhabit the area.
Around the 4 km (2.5 miles) mark, you'll reach Goathurst Common. This area is known for its dense woodlands and serene atmosphere. The trail here can be a bit challenging due to the uneven terrain, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. The elevation gain in this section is gradual but noticeable, adding to the overall challenge of the hike.
Continuing on, you'll arrive at Dryhill Nature Reserve around the 8 km (5 miles) point. This reserve is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and offers a fascinating glimpse into the region's ancient past. The reserve is home to a variety of fossils, dating back to the Cretaceous period. Take some time to explore the area and enjoy the panoramic views from the hilltop.
The trail also passes by several historical landmarks. One notable site is the remains of a medieval manor house near Sundridge. This area has a rich history dating back to the Norman Conquest, and you can still see remnants of the old structures. Additionally, the trail skirts the edge of the historic Knole Park, a 1,000-acre deer park that has been a part of the local heritage for centuries.
Given the varied terrain and the presence of several intersecting paths, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. The trail is well-marked, but having a digital map can be very helpful, especially in the denser woodland areas.
Throughout the hike, you'll encounter a diverse range of wildlife. The woodlands are home to deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species, including woodpeckers and owls. The fields and meadows are often dotted with wildflowers, particularly in the spring and summer months, adding a splash of color to your journey.
As you loop back towards Sundridge, the trail descends gently, offering a relaxing end to your hike. The final 2 km (1.2 miles) take you through more open fields and past a few quaint cottages, giving you a taste of rural Kent life.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and moderate physical challenge, making it an excellent choice for a day hike.
