To reach the trailhead, you can either drive or use public transport. If driving, you can park near Penshurst Place, a historic manor house with ample parking facilities. From the station, you can either walk or take a local taxi to reach the starting point.
The trail begins near Penshurst Place, a stunning 14th-century manor house that is well worth a visit either before or after your hike. As you set off, you'll traverse through a mix of woodland, open fields, and charming English countryside. The first section of the trail is relatively flat, allowing you to ease into the hike.
One of the highlights of this trail is its rich historical context. Penshurst Place itself has a storied past, having been the ancestral home of the Sidney family since the 16th century. As you continue, you'll pass through the village of Chiddingstone, which is one of the best-preserved Tudor villages in England. The village is owned by the National Trust and features Chiddingstone Castle, a historic house with collections of art and artifacts.
The trail offers a variety of natural landscapes. You'll walk through ancient woodlands where you might spot deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. In the spring and summer months, the fields are often filled with wildflowers, adding a splash of color to your hike. Keep an eye out for the River Eden, which you will cross at several points; it's a great spot for a quick rest and some scenic photos.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time tracking to ensure you stay on course. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can be invaluable, especially in the more wooded sections where paths can be less distinct.
The trail features a gentle elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet), spread out over the 16 km (10 miles). The terrain is varied, including dirt paths, grassy fields, and some paved sections through the villages. Good hiking boots are recommended, especially after rain when some sections can become muddy.
As you loop back towards Penshurst, you'll pass through more open fields and small woodlands, offering a peaceful end to your hike. The final stretch brings you back to Penshurst Place, where you can relax and perhaps enjoy a visit to the manor house and its beautiful gardens.
