Trail Overview

The trail weaves through four distinct woodlands: Great Wood, Randall Wood, Shorne Wood, and Cobhambury Wood. Each section offers its own unique charm and challenges, making for a varied and engaging hike.

Great Wood

Starting from Shorne Woods Country Park, you'll first enter Great Wood. This section is characterized by its dense canopy of ancient oak and beech trees. The forest floor is often carpeted with bluebells in the spring, creating a picturesque start to your hike. Keep an eye out for the numerous bird species that inhabit this area, including woodpeckers and nuthatches.

Randall Wood

As you transition into Randall Wood, the trail becomes slightly more rugged. This area is known for its rich biodiversity, including various species of fungi and wildflowers. The terrain here is a bit more undulating, contributing to the overall elevation gain of the hike. You'll also find several small streams that add to the serene atmosphere.

Shorne Wood

Shorne Wood is perhaps the most historically significant part of the trail. This woodland was once part of the estate of Cobham Hall, a grand manor house dating back to the 16th century. As you hike through, you'll come across remnants of old boundary walls and ancient trees that have stood the test of time. The paths here are well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track.

Cobhambury Wood

The final section, Cobhambury Wood, offers a mix of open glades and dense thickets. This area is particularly beautiful in the autumn when the leaves turn vibrant shades of red and gold. The trail here is relatively flat, providing a gentle end to your hike. Wildlife is abundant, and you might spot deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species.
