The trail begins near Etchinghill and quickly immerses you in the serene landscapes of the North Downs Way and Elham Valley Way. The North Downs Way is a long-distance path that stretches across the chalk ridges of the North Downs, offering stunning views and a variety of flora and fauna.
Starting from Etchinghill, the trail heads westward, gradually ascending towards Cherry Garden Hill. This section is approximately 5 km (3.1 miles) and features a steady climb, gaining about 150 meters (492 feet) in elevation. As you ascend, you'll pass through lush woodlands and open fields, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Cherry Garden Hill is a notable high point on the trail, providing expansive views of the Kent Downs. This area is rich in chalk grassland, home to a variety of wildflowers and butterflies, particularly in the spring and summer months. Keep an eye out for the Adonis blue butterfly and the fragrant wild thyme.
Continuing along the North Downs Way, the trail meanders through a mix of woodland and open countryside. This section is relatively flat and stretches for about 4 km (2.5 miles). The path is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track.
The trail then intersects with the Elham Valley Way, a scenic route that follows the course of the now-defunct Elham Valley Railway. This section is approximately 3 km (1.9 miles) and takes you through tranquil woodlands and past historic sites. Look out for the remnants of old railway bridges and stations, which add a touch of historical intrigue to your hike.
The trail is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The woodlands are home to deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species, including the elusive nightingale. The chalk grasslands support a diverse range of plant life, from orchids to rare grasses.
The North Downs Way and Elham Valley Way are steeped in history. The North Downs Way follows ancient trackways used by pilgrims traveling to Canterbury, while the Elham Valley Way traces the route of a railway line that played a crucial role during World War II. The area around Etchinghill itself has historical significance, with evidence of Roman and medieval settlements.
The final 3 km (1.9 miles) of the trail loop back towards Etchinghill, descending gradually through open fields and quiet lanes. This section offers a gentle cooldown after the more strenuous climbs earlier in the hike.
Given the moderate difficulty of the trail, it's advisable to wear sturdy hiking boots and bring plenty of water, especially during warmer months. The trail can be muddy in places after rain, so waterproof gear is recommended. Always check the weather forecast before setting out and consider using HiiKER for real-time navigation and trail updates.
This trail offers a rewarding blend of natural beauty, historical interest, and physical challenge, making it a must-visit for hikers exploring the Kent countryside.
