Boarley and Boxley Warren

Starting near the picturesque village of Boxley in Kent, England, this 7 km (approximately 4.3 miles) loop trail offers a delightful mix of natural beauty and historical intrigue. With an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet), it provides a moderate challenge suitable for most hikers.

Getting There

To reach the trailhead, you can drive and park near the Boxley Village Hall, which is a convenient starting point. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Maidstone East. From there, you can take a local bus to Boxley Village or a short taxi ride.

Trail Overview

The trail begins with a gentle ascent through ancient woodlands, where you’ll be surrounded by a canopy of oak, beech, and ash trees. This initial section is relatively easy, making it a good warm-up for the more challenging parts ahead. Keep an eye out for the diverse birdlife, including woodpeckers and nuthatches, which are commonly seen in this area.

Historical Significance

As you progress, you’ll come across the remnants of Boxley Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded in the 12th century. The ruins are a poignant reminder of the area’s rich history and offer a great spot for a brief rest and some exploration. The abbey was dissolved during the reign of Henry VIII, and its stones were repurposed for local buildings, adding a layer of historical intrigue to your hike.

Mid-Trail Highlights

Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you’ll reach the Boxley Warren Nature Reserve. This area is a haven for wildlife, including rare species of butterflies and orchids. The chalk grassland here is particularly stunning in the spring and summer months when wildflowers are in full bloom. The trail through the reserve is well-marked, but it’s always a good idea to have a navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track.

Elevation and Terrain

The trail’s most significant elevation gain occurs as you approach the North Downs. This section can be a bit steep and rocky, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. The climb is well worth it, as you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Kent countryside. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Thames Estuary.

Final Stretch

The descent back towards Boxley Village is gradual and takes you through more woodland and open fields. This part of the trail is less strenuous, allowing you to enjoy the serene landscape and perhaps spot some deer or foxes. The loop concludes back at Boxley Village Hall, where you can relax and reflect on your hike.
