“The Godshill Loop offers stunning landscapes, historical ruins, and panoramic views on a medium-difficulty 8 km hike.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Godshill on the Isle of Wight, the Godshill Loop via Stenbury Down and Appuldurcombe House is a delightful 8 km (5 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of approximately 200 meters (656 feet). This medium-difficulty hike offers a blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and panoramic views.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Godshill, which is well-signposted from major roads on the Isle of Wight. There is parking available near the village center. If you prefer public transport, buses run regularly from Newport and Shanklin to Godshill. The nearest bus stop is Godshill Griffin, just a short walk from the trailhead.
The trail begins in Godshill, a village known for its charming thatched cottages and the medieval All Saints Church. As you set off, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in the lush countryside, with the path initially taking you through fields and woodlands.
After approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), you'll start the ascent to Stenbury Down. The climb is gradual but steady, gaining about 100 meters (328 feet) in elevation. The effort is well worth it, as the summit offers sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, including the English Channel on clear days. Keep an eye out for red squirrels and various bird species that inhabit this area.
Descending from Stenbury Down, the trail leads you to the historic Appuldurcombe House, around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark. This 18th-century Baroque mansion, now a picturesque ruin, was once one of the grandest houses on the Isle of Wight. The grounds are open to the public, and it's worth taking some time to explore the remains and the beautifully landscaped gardens.
From Appuldurcombe House, the trail loops back towards Godshill. This section is relatively flat and takes you through more woodland and open fields. The final stretch offers a gentle descent, making for a pleasant end to your hike.
While the trail is well-marked, it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time tracking. Ensure you have appropriate footwear, as some sections can be muddy, especially after rain. Carry water and snacks, and be prepared for changing weather conditions.
This trail offers a perfect mix of natural beauty and historical intrigue, making it a rewarding experience for hikers of all levels.
