Generally very well signposted. I followed the trail markers and didn't need the app 95% of the time. If you follow the trail markers they lead you on a slightly different route of 17.92 miles. I did this in trail runners on a wet and muddy day. I didn't have any issues with lack of ankle support or grip

Appalling trail that spends more time on dangerous roads avoiding the AONB than actually enjoying it. Also, you must take a diversion (on roads) when leaving and returning Wendover as the trail is inaccessible due to HS2 works. One to avoid.
