If driving, set your GPS to Amwell Nature Reserve, located near Ware, Hertfordshire. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Ware, which is well-connected to London Liverpool Street. From Ware station, it's a short taxi ride or a pleasant walk to the trailhead.### Trail Overview The trail begins at the Amwell Nature Reserve, a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. As you start your hike, you'll be greeted by a variety of bird species, including kingfishers, herons, and swans. The reserve is also home to several rare plant species, making it a botanist's delight.### Amwell Nature Reserve to Hardmead Lock The first section of the trail takes you through the Amwell Nature Reserve. After approximately 2 km (1.2 miles), you'll reach Hardmead Lock. This historic lock is part of the River Lee Navigation, a waterway with roots dating back to the Roman era. The lock itself is a great spot to take a break and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.### Hardmead Lock to Ware Continuing from Hardmead Lock, the trail follows the towpath along the River Lee. This section is particularly scenic, with lush greenery and the gentle flow of the river accompanying you. After about 4 km (2.5 miles), you'll arrive in the charming town of Ware. Ware is rich in history, with its origins tracing back to the Saxon period. Notable landmarks include the Ware Priory and the Grade I listed St. Mary's Church.### Ware to Amwell Nature Reserve From Ware, the trail loops back towards the Amwell Nature Reserve.
