The trail begins near Popham Airfield, a small but historically significant airfield used during World War II. As you start your hike, you'll immediately notice the lush greenery and the serene atmosphere of the Hampshire countryside.
About 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll enter Walker's Copse, a dense woodland area filled with native trees like oak, ash, and beech. This section is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up for the rest of the hike. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species. The undergrowth can be thick in places, so wearing long sleeves and pants is advisable.
Continuing for another 3 km (1.9 miles), you'll reach Popham Down Copse. This area is slightly more elevated, offering gentle inclines and declines. The elevation gain here is around 50 meters (164 feet), providing a moderate challenge. The copse is known for its beautiful wildflowers in the spring and summer months, including bluebells and primroses. This section also offers some of the best views of the surrounding countryside.
Around the 6 km (3.7 miles) mark, you'll come across remnants of ancient Roman roads and possibly even some old boundary stones. This area has a rich history dating back to Roman times, and it's worth taking a moment to appreciate the historical significance. The trail here is well-marked, but using a navigation tool like HiiKER can help you stay on track.
The last 4 km (2.5 miles) of the trail loop back towards Popham Airfield. This section is mostly downhill, making for a pleasant and easy finish. You'll pass through open fields and meadows, which are perfect for a picnic if you want to take a break. The trail is well-maintained, but can be muddy after rain, so waterproof hiking boots are recommended.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and historical intrigue, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast.
