The trailhead is conveniently located near the village of North Warnborough, which can be reached by car or public transport. If you're driving, you can park near the North Warnborough Village Hall. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Hook, from where you can take a local bus or taxi to the trailhead.
The trail meanders through a series of picturesque woodlands, including Street End Copse, Black Wood, and Dipley Copse. The terrain is relatively flat, making it a moderate hike suitable for families and casual hikers. The loop format ensures that you end up back at your starting point, making logistics straightforward.
Starting from North Warnborough, the first section of the trail takes you through Street End Copse. This area is known for its dense foliage and a variety of native tree species, including oak and beech. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer and various bird species. The path here is well-trodden but can be muddy after rain, so waterproof footwear is advisable.
Approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) into the hike, you'll enter Black Wood. This section is slightly more open, with wider paths and a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees. Black Wood is particularly beautiful in the autumn when the leaves change color. There are several small streams running through this area, adding to the scenic beauty. This is a good spot to take a short break and enjoy the natural surroundings.
The final section of the loop takes you through Dipley Copse, another dense woodland area. This part of the trail is known for its rich biodiversity, including various species of fungi and wildflowers. The ground here is relatively flat, making for an easy walk. As you exit Dipley Copse, you'll find yourself back near North Warnborough, completing the loop.
The region around North Warnborough is steeped in history. The nearby Odiham Castle, also known as King John's Castle, is a significant historical landmark. Built in the early 13th century, it played a role in the signing of the Magna Carta. While the castle itself is not on the trail, it's worth a visit if you have extra time.
For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can help you stay on course, especially in the denser woodland areas.
This 11 km loop offers a delightful mix of natural beauty and historical intrigue, making it a rewarding hike for those exploring the Hampshire countryside.
