“The Shappen Hill and Long Pond Loop offers an 8 km scenic hike through ancient woodlands and vibrant heathlands.”
Starting near the picturesque village of Hampshire, England, the Shappen Hill and Long Pond Loop is an 8 km (approximately 5 miles) trail with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet). This loop trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to the village of Burley, Hampshire, which is the nearest significant landmark. There is a small car park near the village center where you can leave your vehicle. For those using public transport, the nearest train station is Brockenhurst. From Brockenhurst, you can take a local bus or taxi to Burley.
The trail begins in Burley, a village known for its charming thatched cottages and historical significance. As you start your hike, you'll pass through ancient woodlands that are part of the New Forest National Park. This area is rich in history, dating back to the time of William the Conqueror, who established the New Forest as a royal hunting ground in 1079.
At approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Shappen Hill. This section offers a gentle ascent and provides panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The hill is covered in heathland, which blooms with vibrant purple heather during late summer. Keep an eye out for New Forest ponies grazing in this area; they are a common sight and add to the trail's charm.
Continuing on, you'll descend slightly and enter a dense forest area. This part of the trail is particularly beautiful in autumn when the leaves turn golden and red. The forest is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars to spot woodpeckers, nuthatches, and even the occasional buzzard.
Around the 5 km (3.1 miles) mark, you'll arrive at Long Pond. This serene body of water is a great spot to take a break and enjoy a packed lunch. The pond is surrounded by lush vegetation and is a habitat for ducks, frogs, and dragonflies. If you're lucky, you might even spot a kingfisher darting across the water.
The final 3 km (1.9 miles) of the loop take you through more mixed woodland and open heathland. This section is relatively flat, making for a pleasant end to your hike. As you approach Burley again, you'll pass by some ancient oak trees, which are believed to be several hundred years old.
For navigation, it is highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking to ensure you stay on the correct path. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience and provide peace of mind.
This trail offers a delightful mix of natural beauty, wildlife, and historical significance, making it a rewarding hike for those looking to explore the New Forest area.
