To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to the village of Hampshire, where you can find parking near the local pub, The Hampshire Arms. For those using public transport, take the train to Basingstoke Station and then catch the local bus service to Hampshire village. The trailhead is conveniently located near the village center, making it easily accessible.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through a mixed woodland area, where you can expect to see a variety of native trees such as oak, beech, and ash. This initial section is about 1 km (0.6 miles) long and gains approximately 30 meters (98 feet) in elevation. Keep an eye out for the diverse birdlife, including woodpeckers and songbirds, which are commonly spotted here.
As you continue, you'll come across the remnants of an old Roman road at around the 2 km (1.2 miles) mark. This ancient pathway is a testament to the region's rich history and offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. The trail here is relatively flat, allowing you to take in the historical significance without too much exertion.
Around the 3 km (1.8 miles) point, you'll reach the highest elevation of the trail at Ragged Boys Hill.
