Loop
“Step through ancient hill forts, golden beech woods, and wildflower meadows on this enchanting South Downs adventure.”
Starting from the car park near Old Winchester Hill National Nature Reserve, this 28 km (about 17.4 miles) loop with approximately 500 metres (1,640 feet) of elevation gain offers a gentle yet rewarding exploration of the South Downs National Park. The trailhead is easily accessible by car, with parking available at the Old Winchester Hill car park, located off Hayden Lane near Warnford. For those using public transport, the nearest railway station is Petersfield, from which local buses or taxis can take you closer to the start.Old Winchester Hill and Ancient HistoryThe route begins by ascending Old Winchester Hill, a prominent chalk hill crowned by an Iron Age hill fort and Bronze Age burial mounds. This area is a designated National Nature Reserve, celebrated for its rich chalk grassland habitat. In spring and summer, the slopes are alive with wildflowers such as orchids and cowslips, and butterflies including the Adonis blue and chalkhill blue. The summit offers panoramic views across the Meon Valley and the South Downs, with the fort’s earthworks and burial barrows providing a tangible link to the region’s prehistoric past.Beacon Hill Beeches and Woodland PathsContinuing west, the trail leads towards Beacon Hill, another high point with a beech woodland that is particularly atmospheric in autumn when the leaves turn golden. The woodland is home to a variety of birdlife, including nuthatches, woodpeckers, and tawny owls. The path undulates gently, with occasional steeper sections, but the overall gradient remains manageable for most walkers. At around 10 km (6.2 miles), you’ll pass through open fields and hedgerows, where you may spot roe deer and red kites soaring overhead.Soberton Down and the Meon ValleyThe loop then descends towards Soberton Down, a tranquil stretch of rolling downland and farmland. This section is notable for its peaceful atmosphere and the chance to see traditional grazing livestock, which help maintain the biodiversity of the chalk grassland. The route skirts the edge of Soberton village, where you can find a historic church and traditional country pub, ideal for a rest stop. At approximately 20 km (12.4 miles), the trail rejoins the Meon Valley Trail, a former railway line now popular with walkers and cyclists, offering easy navigation and gentle gradients.Navigation and Trail ConditionsThe entire loop is well-signposted, but carrying a digital map on HiiKER is recommended for precise navigation, especially at field crossings and woodland junctions. The paths are mostly well-maintained, though some sections can become muddy after rain, particularly in shaded woodland areas. Sturdy walking shoes or boots are advisable, and during wetter months, gaiters can help keep feet dry.Wildlife and Seasonal HighlightsThroughout the year, the area supports a diverse range of wildlife. Spring and summer bring a profusion of wildflowers and butterflies, while autumn is marked by vibrant foliage in the beech woods. Birdwatchers should keep an eye out for skylarks, buzzards, and the occasional peregrine falcon. The chalk streams and ponds along the route are home to dragonflies and, with luck, you might spot a water vole.Getting ThereBy car, follow signs to Old Winchester Hill National Nature Reserve, with the car park located off Hayden Lane, near Warnford (postcode SO32 3LH). For public transport, take a train to Petersfield, then use local bus services or a taxi to reach the trailhead. There are no major facilities at the start, so bring sufficient water and snacks, though pubs and shops can be found in nearby villages such as Soberton and Warnford. This loop offers a blend of ancient history, scenic vistas, and rich biodiversity, making it a rewarding day out for walkers of all abilities.
