To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to Lyndhurst, Hampshire, which is the nearest significant landmark. From Lyndhurst, follow the signs to Matley Wood car park, where you can leave your vehicle. For those using public transport, take a train to Brockenhurst Station. From there, you can catch a local bus or taxi to the Matley Wood car park.
The trail begins at the Matley Wood car park, where you'll immediately be greeted by the serene beauty of the New Forest National Park. The first section of the trail takes you through Matley Wood, a picturesque area filled with ancient oak and beech trees. Keep an eye out for the New Forest ponies that often graze in this area.
The New Forest is a haven for wildlife. In addition to the famous New Forest ponies, you might encounter deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species such as woodpeckers and owls. The flora is equally impressive, with ancient trees, heathlands, and seasonal wildflowers adding to the trail's charm.

The last 3 km (1.9 miles) of the trail loop back towards Matley Wood car park. This section is relatively flat and offers a gentle end to your hike. As you approach the car park, you'll pass through more open heathland, providing a final opportunity to spot wildlife.
