Starting near Hampshire, England, the Brownhill Inclosure and Wiverley Inclosure Loop is a delightful 10 km (approximately 6.2 miles) trail with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet). This loop trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, set your GPS to Lyndhurst, Hampshire, which is the nearest significant landmark. From Lyndhurst, follow the signs to the New Forest National Park, where the trail begins. For those using public transport, take a train to Brockenhurst Station, which is well-connected to major cities like London and Southampton. From Brockenhurst, you can catch a local bus or taxi to Lyndhurst.
The trail starts near the New Forest National Park, a region rich in history and natural beauty. As you begin your hike, you'll traverse through Brownhill Inclosure, a dense woodland area known for its towering oak and beech trees. The first 2 km (1.2 miles) are relatively flat, making for an easy start. Keep an eye out for the New Forest ponies, a breed native to this area, often seen grazing freely.
Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you'll come across the Knightwood Oak, one of the oldest and largest oak trees in the New Forest, estimated to be over 500 years old. This ancient tree is a significant historical landmark and offers a great spot for a short break and some photos.
Continuing on, the trail leads you into Wiverley Inclosure. This section is slightly more challenging with a gradual ascent of about 50 meters (164 feet) over the next 2 km (1.2 miles). The inclosure is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer and numerous bird species. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars to spot species like the woodpecker and the rare Dartford warbler.
The trail is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a reliable navigation tool. HiiKER is an excellent app for this purpose, providing detailed maps and real-time location tracking. The terrain varies from compact dirt paths to more rugged, root-covered sections, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended.
The New Forest area has a rich history dating back to the time of William the Conqueror, who designated it as a royal hunting ground in 1079. As you hike, you'll notice remnants of ancient woodlands and possibly even some old boundary markers used to delineate hunting territories.
The last 3 km (1.9 miles) of the trail loop back towards the starting point, offering a gentle descent through mixed woodland and open heathland. This section provides panoramic views of the surrounding forest, especially beautiful in the late afternoon light.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
